In the American state of Virginia, people recently rescued a newborn fox that had lost its mother. DISGUISE The baby fox, or kit, was found shortly after its birth. Workers at the Richmond Wildlife Center wore a disguise while feeding and caring for the kit. They say it will help its survival when released into the wild with other foxes. The noun disguise means a change in appearance so as to not be recognized. You know, people around the world are concerned about inflation. JR: You’re right! We should explore how people talk about inflation in everyday situations. Inflation FP: Inflation is a noun. It means an increase in the price of goods and services. JR: This means that inflation reduces the purchasing power of money that is saved or earned from work. FP: Inflation’s meaning of "enlargement of prices" was first recorded in 1838 in American English. JR:We also have a verb form: inflate. FP:We often, but do not always, use “inflate” with a direct object. JR: For example, you might read something like this: “Economists worry that supply chain issues could inflate prices.” FP: The plural noun “prices” is the object of the verb “inflate.” JR: In some cases, we use “inflate” without a direct object. For example, you might read something like this: Experts worry that supply chain disruptions could cause prices to inflate. FP: So, we have inflation, the noun, and inflate, the verb. But if we compare how common they are, we arrive at a clear finding: the noun “inflation” is much more commonly used. JR: As a result, it’s probably better to use the noun form in everyday situations. But knowing about the verb form can help you – especially if you study economics or finance. Hello! I’m John Russell. Let’s continue our exploration of common words, phrases, expressions, and questions. In recent lessons, we examined a polite way to get another person’s attention: by saying “Excuse me.” We have also explored how to ask questions about location with the question “Where is....?” Now, we should practice using them in an everyday situation. The good news is that you have a native speaker to practice with. The bad news is that the native speaker is.... me. Imagine you are in a train station. Get the attention of the employee in a polite way. Ask about the location of track D5. Here is one possible way to deal with the situation. You could say: “Excuse me. Where is Track D5?” This combines a polite way to get attention as well as a specific question about a location. Let’s practice. Repeat after me slowly: “Excuse me. Where is Track D5?” Now let’s ask the question a little more quickly. “Excuse me. Where is Track D5?” Now imagine we need to ask about the restroom. We can use the same structure but use the noun phrase “the restroom” in place of “Track D5.” So you might ask, “Excuse me. Where is the restroom?” That’s all for today! Hello! I’m John Russell. Let’s continue our exploration of common words, phrases, and expressions. Today we focus on language we might use when we might need to interrupt other people. In other words, we use this phrase when we need to get the attention of someone who is speaking. It goes like this: “Sorry to interrupt, but...” We begin with the word “sorry.” This is an informal way to apologize. Why might you need to apologize? Well, in American culture, we consider it impolite to cut in when someone else is speaking. One important part about the word “sorry.” The vowel sound can be tricky. Repeat the vowel sound after me. And make sure your jaw and lips are relaxed. (use vowel sound from sorry) (repeat three times) Now let’s consider the word “interrupt.” It has the neutral vowel sound a couple of times. We make the neutral vowel sound like this: (neutral vowel sound/schwa) Now let’s say the whole word: Interrupt Interrupt Now let’s combine our words. Repeat after me: Sorry to interrupt, but... Sorry to interrupt, but .... Sorry to interrupt, but.... What comes after the word “but?” Any kind of simple statement that involves a clause – a subject and verb grouping.
