Real English® Lesson 31 - How long does it take? Subtitled

Real English® Lesson 31 - How long does it take? Subtitled

Like many Real English® clips, this one includes illustrations to make the grammar self-explanatory. The advantages of pictures-in-video become obvious in this clip. The notion of How long does it take? is explained by the video itself. This lesson presents us with a unique use of the present simple, to talk about the duration of an activity. How long does it take? is contrasted with how + adjective ("How long is the Alaskan Pipeline?" for example), in the second part of this lesson. Peter is one of the USA's last traditional ferriers (also spelled farrier). He makes horseshoes manually for his own horse and for all the other horses which stroll through Central Park with tourists in the carriages. I'm not sure why, but this is one of my favorite lessons. Maybe it's because we had a friendly discussion with Peter (the first interviewee), after turning off the camera, and then invited him to lunch, where we all ate a Manhattan specialty, hot pastrami sandwiches with lots of sauerkraut and giant pickles, at a deli on 47th Street. #learn english #esl #esl video #ESL english lessons #esl lessons #free #beginner #intermediate #advanced #efl #american #british #real english #teaching esl

Real English ® 29 NEW Subtitled

Real English ® 29 NEW Subtitled

There's quite a bit of interesting vocabulary in this video, a continuation of lesson 30. For example we learn about husbandry, and hanging out, mowing pastures, and raising hogs. We also learn bizarre little facts, such as the fact that some Americans equate "Lipton" with soup instead of tea. We learn what a paralegal does, for example, and the fact that an acre is a lot smaller than a hectare. #learn english #esl #esl video #ESL english lessons #esl lessons #free #beginner #intermediate #advanced #efl #american #british #real english #teaching esl

This is one of the least watched videos in Real English®, for reasons I do not understand. Personally, I really like the people we meet here, such as Joe in Exercises 1 to 3, who I find to be a most likeable guy. The grammar structure illustrated is "like doing", which is the same as "like to do". As you know, certain verbs are followed by gerunds. You can find a list of these verbs here. Reflexive pronouns are also introduced thanks to Joe, with a specific page for the grammar involved. In Exercise 6, we ran into a famous New York City personality, which is probably why she politely refused to tell us her last name. Of course we respect her wishes, and will not tell you who her father is!eal-english.com/ #learn english #esl #esl video #ESL english lessons #esl lessons #free #beginner #intermediate #advanced #efl #american #british #real english #teaching esl

Real English® What's your job? What do you do? (modified) with Subtitles

Real English® What's your job? What do you do? (modified) with Subtitles

I decided to make 2 separate videos for this lesson about jobs. The version on this page, for Pre-Intermediate and Intermediate students, concentrates on a variety of verbs in the Present Simple. For example, the question is usually "What do you do for a living?" and the answer always includes a verb in the present, such as "I direct traffic", to give one of the most simple questions / replies found in the exercises which make up this lesson. There is also a version for real beginners which is quite short (approx. 2 minutes). The verb structure used in this short version is limited to am, is and are. For example the question is "What's your job?" and the answer "I'm an actor". However the exercises in this lesson use both types of replies, both types of uses of the present tense. I was thinking of my own beginners when I organized it this way because the objective in some of the courses in our school is to enable our students to talk about themselves, and their their professional lives after a limited number of classroom sessions in our school. This strategy works for my own needs. I just hope that it is also useful for other teachers! In other words, I hope that these limited videos will be useful for teachers looking for beginner job talk. #learn english #esl #esl video #ESL english lessons #esl lessons #free #beginner #intermediate #advanced #efl #american #british #real english #teaching esl

Real English® 38 - What are you wearing? Subtitled

Real English® 38 - What are you wearing? Subtitled

The question enables us to continue practising the Present Continuous, with clothing vocabulary in the replies provided by the interviewees. 15 people are wearing 39 different articles of clothing in this video. They tell us what they are. Ronaldo Lima, Jr. a brilliant EFL teacher in Brazil, has written on his blog about this particular video. This is part of his conclusion: In a clothes lesson, when students started describing what they are wearing, I would focus on the quantifiers. If they said "I'm wearing a T-shirt, scarf, hat, shoes and jacket", I would probably correct them and have them say "I'm wearing a scarf, a hat, a pair of shoes and a jacket. But why, if that's not necessarily how people would say it? With these real-english videos, though, we can, again, expose students to the real language real people use. #learn english #esl #esl video #ESL english lessons #esl lessons #free #beginner #intermediate #advanced #efl #american #british #real english #teaching esl

Real English® 23 Have Got = Got = Have!

Real English® 23 Have Got = Got = Have!

Although it has sometimes been difficult to find interviewees for Real English®, requiring us to wait in the street for longish amounts of time before finding acceptable candidates, it has generally been fun collecting "language donations" from the general public. This was one of the most fun questions we've asked despite its apparent banality. Very few people refused to be interviewed for the question, and all of them accepted to sign the release forms after being interviewed. We needed only 2 afternoons to get enough material for this particular video. One afternoon we interviewed people coming out of a Tesco in the south of England, and the other afternoon on the Island of Nantucket (Massachusetts, USA), waiting for customers to emerge from the island's only supermaket. The questions, of course, was "What have you got in the bag(s)?" and "Can you show us an item or two?" There was one surprise for us while filming for this lesson. We thought that the British people we met would answer with "I've got..." in a systematic fashion while knowing that Americans would use "I've got..." and "I got" interchangeably. In point of fact, half of the British people we met (including a lot of Brits you do not meet in this video, for a wide variety of reasons) also used the so-called American "I got". It seems that this grammatical shortcut has become universal. Both nationalities used "I have", of course, as a 3rd synonymous form. Finally, it was interesting to hear Siegfried, the interviewer, speak to myself, the cameraman. Since it was a fast-paced situation, he would often ask me "Got it?" or "Have you got it?". You can hear him asking me this question over a dozen times in this lesson. He wanted to be sure that I got good pictures of the items that people showed us, providing an unexpected "got" bonus for students. #learn english #esl #esl video #ESL english lessons #esl lessons #free #beginner #intermediate #advanced #efl #american #british #real english #teaching esl
